Horry County Material Recycling Facility

Video Transcript:

TLDR: Horry County’s recycling facility processes 100 tons daily and installed 12 SonicAire fans to eliminate weeks-long manual ceiling cleaning. The system reduced overtime costs and created demonstrable before/after results that convinced board members to expand the installation.

Key Points:
• Processes 100 tons of recyclables daily
• Manual cleaning took weeks with harnesses and lifts
• Board members approved expansion after seeing results
• Clear visual proof: dusty areas without fans vs. clean areas with fans
• Created cleaner, safer, healthier facility

(I’m) Rodney Cannon, Horry County Solid Authority.  My position is deputy director of recycling. I manage the “MRF” which is the material recycling facility here in Conway South Carolina.

Our goal is to process all the recyclables from Horry County to try to make it as clean as possible. To produce less tonnage going to the landfill. We do about a hundred tons a day here at Solid Waste Authority Recycling Facility.

Our goal is to be as efficient as possible. To minimize the help that we use to try to run with automation to get it to run faster, cleaner, and produce more material.

In our warehouse facility where we do all of the processing, we had problems with the dust getting everywhere. We’re producing fibers so the fiber is producing a lot of dust getting on the ceiling. For safety reasons, we had to get it cleaned. So, we were taking man lifts, putting people in with harnesses, sweeping. We might could get 50 feet done at a time, so it took us a process of probably a couple of weeks just to get ceilings clean.

Talked to some of the people that SonicAire had dealt with before and everybody we talked to said it was great. So, we went through the process of looking at videos and looking at everything and it worked, and we thought it would work here, and it did.

We were very pleased with the first six that we purchased from SonicAire. Once we saw those, some of our board members seen the results of them and they recommended us to go ahead and get some more, and we actually bought six more. We put them is strategic places to try to minimize the dust. So far so good; they’re working.

At Solid Waste Authority, we actually started reducing overtime by using SonicAire fans because now I got something that can clean them without any man power.

Anybody in the business that runs a MRF (Material Recycling facility) come here and look at ours. They will see the SonicAire fans, how they work, how they get the dust down in the areas we needed them.

We still have some places we need to add fans in the future I can show them where a fan is not located, where the dust is still at, and show them where the fans are located now and where there is no dust. Seeing the results just speaks for itself.

We are very pleased with SonicAire. So far everything I’ve asked for they’ve been really accommodating to us. It has been a great process and the results speak for themselves as far as where the dust was.

Here at Solid Waste Authority, we have a cleaner facility than we had before because of SonicAire, it’s a safer Facility because of SonicAire, and from a health standpoint, it’s a lot safer without the dust.
